Charles P. “Carlos” Nagore ordained as a transitional deacon for the Diocese of Tucson

Rev. Mr. Charles P. “Carlos” Nagore came a step closer to the priesthood this month, as he celebrated his Transitional Diaconate Ordination before family and friends at St. Augustine Cathedral, September 6. Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas, celebrated the Mass, and he was joined by more than 50 other priests and deacons from across the Diocese of Tucson.

Early in the ceremony, Bishop Kicanas encouraged the brimming Cathedral’s parishioners to bellow “Amen!” It continued to be a spirited Mass, and the warmth from Carlos as well his family, friends, and fellow seminarians from the Diocese of Phoenix and St. John’s Seminary in California who attended, could be felt by everyone who was present.

“It is with great joy that the people of God affirm your call to serve now as a deacon in the Church,” Bishop Kicanas said to Carlos. 

He continued, “Glory be to God for all the good that He does and will do through you.”

Carlos then avowed to the promises he will keep as an ordained religious and promised to be obedient to Bishop Kicanas. He laid prostrate during the litany of saints and was then dressed by Fr. John Vianney Lê, OSB, from Mount Angel Abbey and Fr. Edson Elizarraras, from St. Christopher's Parish in Marana, Arizona, in the vestments of the diaconate.


Tears filled the eyes of Carlos’ parents and immediate family, as Bishop Kicanas congratulated Carlos and his fellow deacons embraced him, to cheers and claps from parishioners. He then prepared the altar for the first time.


The Mass continued, and Bishop Kicanas then encouraged Carlos to speak. He stated,

“From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to offer my deepest thanks to all who joined today, as well as for accompanying me on this journey of discernment.” He added, “I couldn’t have persevered to this point without your love and support. It’s a reminder of the love and support that ultimately comes from God… Please continue to pray for me as I return to school and begin to prepare for my priestly vocation. Thank you all, and God bless!”

Parishioners erupted in applause once more, and Carlos’ infectious smile filled the Cathedral with energy, as the Mass ended.


Though Carlos has now been ordained a transitional deacon, his journey continues, as he returns to St. John’s Seminary to begin his path towards priesthood with God at his side.
