As we approach the Sacred Triduum, we invite you to join us for the Service of Tenebrae, an ancient and solemn prayer of the Church traditionally celebrated during Holy Week. Tenebrae, meaning “shadows,” is a candlelit service of psalms, Scripture, and sacred music. As the Passion of Christ is proclaimed, candles are extinguished one by one, and the church gradually descends into darkness. This powerful movement into shadow reflects the sorrow of the Lord’s suffering and the silence of the tomb. The service concludes in stillness. There is no Mass or Communion. The prayer lasts approximately one hour.
The Service of Tenebrae offers our community a powerful opportunity to enter more deeply into the mystery of Holy Week through prayer, Scripture, and sacred silence. By gathering together in this solemn experience, we strengthen our unity as we reflect on Christ’s Passion and the hope that follows. This shared time of contemplation helps us prepare our hearts for the Sacred Triduum and the joy of the Resurrection.
