Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger has been named the 2026 Cornerstone Awardee for the Catholic Foundation. The former bishop of the Diocese of Tucson was notified earlier this winter. On Thursday, December 11, the board of directors watched a cellphone video of Archbishop Weisenburger acknowledging the honor.
Archbishop Weisenburger left the Diocese of Tucson in 2025 when he was appointed to the Archdiocese of Detroit. He had served the Diocese of Tucson for seven years. Each year the Catholic Foundation honors a special person with the Cornerstone Award. Elizabeth Bollinger, Executive Director of the Catholic Foundation explained, "Honorees have gone above and beyond in serving the religious, charitable, or educational needs of our Catholic communities across Southern Arizona. The Cornerstone Award has become the highest recognition bestowed by the Diocese of Tucson and the Catholic Foundation. As our former shepherd Archbishop Weisenburger fully embodies the spirit of the award."The most recent recipients were Sister Charlotte Anne Swift, OP, and Sister Lois Paha, OP, in 2025 and before that was Deacon Tony Underwood and Monsignor Domenico Pinti. Bollinger said there were over a dozen nominations for the 2026 Cornerstone Award.
