Security officer at Chancery receives a Ben’s Bell

The security officer at the Diocese of Tucson downtown Chancery office was recognized this week for his consistent and generous kindness. Alberto Hinojoza supports security measures for the Diocese; he is employed by Arizona Preventive Crime Unit.

On Monday a contingent from Ben's Bells, a Tucson nonprofit, visited the diocese to recognize Hinojoza. Individuals and organizations are recognized after being nominated and selected by a committee. Liz Levine spoke on behalf of Ben’s Bells, and read the nomination:

“In the heart amid the hustle of daily life one security guard is quietly changing lives. Not with a badge or baton but with bottled water, snacks, and words of encouragement. 

Known simply as Albert to most, the longtime guard has made it his mission to serve those overlooked. Every morning, he stocks his closet with bottled water and snacks, handing them out to people experiencing homelessness that come to Cathedral Square for help. He also offers something many have lost—hope.” 

The Catholic Foundation, the primary fundraiser for the Diocese, nominated Hinojoza. The nomination stated, “Sometimes all someone needs is to know they’re seen and that is what he does. He often shares advice on how they can get help or simply listens. A quiet ministry on the sidewalk surrounding the block of Cathedral Square.”

The Chancery office is located at 192 South Stone Avenue; it's located next to Saint Augustine Cathedral.

Ben’s Bells began in 2002. Jeannette Maré, a young mother, had recently lost her son, a toddler. Maré began making wind chimes to celebrate her son and recognize intentional acts of kindness she was shown following her tragedy. More than 20 years later, Ben’s Bells can be found all over the country and at least 80,000 bells have been made and distributed. 

Levine said people are nominated and then a committee selects one person or organization based on their actions—in Hinojoza’s case it was focused on the “dignity, compassion, and community responsibility” he displays.

“He treats people with respect no matter their situation. He reminds us all that kindness is contagious. What started as one man’s gesture of faith has now become a ripple of compassion through the streets of downtown,” the nomination read.

Hinojoza, a native of Douglas, has supported the diocese for 2.5 years. He said, "I was surprised but am very grateful to be recognized. Working in private security is not always easy. We often encounter people on their worst days, but treating people with respect is paramount, no matter the situation. At Arizona Preventive Crime Unit, showing people dignity goes a long with safety and security in our communities."
