From canvas to cathedral: Celebrating Carlo Acutis’ canonization

The Diocese of Tucson’s St. Augustine Cathedral recently celebrated the soon-to-be canonized Carlo Acutis by debuting a full-sized painting of the future saint in the vestibule, August 29.Born in 1991 in Great Britain and raised in Italy, Carlo Acutis was a teenager known for his deep devotion to the Catholic faith, and his innovative use of technology to spread the Good News. He first created websites for his parish and school before cataloging Eucharistic miracles around the world. He is also credited with defending victims of bullying and helping people who are unhoused throughout his lifetime. Unfortunately, Acutis became ill in October 2006 at the age of 15, from what was initially believed to be the flu. He passed away just days later from acute myeloid leukemia—an aggressive cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. He is often called “God’s influencer,” or referred to as the “the patron saint of the internet,” today.Pope Leo XIV will proclaim Carlo Acutis a saint on September 07 in a canonization Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. The event is expected to draw thousands of pilgrims and will be livestreamed globally.
St. Augustine Cathedral artist, John Alan WarfordAcutis’ image was painted in St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson ahead of the canonization by artist John Alan Warford, who previously renovated both the Cathedral and Our Lady’s Chapel in 2011. The vibrant painting depicts the young man in a contemporary red polo shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes, and reflects his relatability and youthful spirit.The new painting reminds us that we are to also live out our faith and care for others. Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas, who promoted the project, said, “The new image welcomes all who enter the Cathedral.” He added, “It reminds us that faith is not confined to sacred spaces—it must be lived out in our care for others.” Rev. Alan Valencia, Pastor of St. Augustine Cathedral and Diocesan Vocations Director, stated,

 

“Carlo Acutis reminds us that holiness is not reserved for the past; it is alive and accessible today. His love for the Eucharist and his ability to evangelize through technology speak directly to our generation. This new painting in our Cathedral is more than art; it’s an invitation to live our faith boldly and authentically, just as Carlo did.”
