Sierra Vista multi-media artist, Michael Prostka, recently created an icon of Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, the Apostle of the Pimeria Alta, as a gift for Bishop Edward Weisenburger. Mr. Prostka is a multi-talented artist, whose work includes a large mural, featuring Padre Kino meeting his good friend, the Sobaipuri Chief, Coro, at the San Pedro River in 1695. The mural graces the Knights of Columbus Hall in Sierra Vista.
Prostka is also a restoration artist, having restored the historic crucifix in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Tombstone and a number of damaged statues. A master of many media, Prostka has also created a number of art works for St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Sierra Vista, where he serves as head of the maintenance department. Prostka shared this perspective on extraordinary talents: “Once I got old enough to realize that I am nothing but what He has graciously chosen to grant me (and several years of effort!), there is no higher purpose for the brush than to glorify God!”
Msgr. Greg Adolf, Prostka’s pastor, said, “When we hired Michael to head our maintenance team, we had no idea that we were hiring an incredibly talented artist at part of the bargain! He can work in any medium! Michael has created a number of beautiful works of art, including very originally designed oil paintings of the four Evangelists, which grace our Adoration Chapel!”
