Students at Loretto Catholic School in Douglas spent Thanksgiving week sharing in the spirit of service by preparing and distributing food baskets in their community. Rosella Melgoza, the principal, said students, parents, and staff collected enough items to donate 30 baskets of food for the less fortunate in Douglas. Loretto Catholic school is a K-8 school with more than 220 students enrolled this academic year. The staff and some students delivered the food baskets to different families referred to them by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Delivery took place on Saturday, November 22, Melgoza said it was, “a beautiful way to start the holiday season.” The food baskets included a turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie, vegetables, and rolls. Melgoza said supporting needy in the community, “set them in a true holiday spirit of taking care of others.” Angelina Schmidt, the interim superintendent of Catholic schools in the diocese said she was moved by the school’s generosity, “This is what Catholic education inspires and motivates.”
