By Father John Paul Forté, OP Pastor, Catholic Newman Center
This year marks a sacred milestone in the life of our Newman Center—100 years of faithful, loving ministry to the students, faculty, and community of the University of Arizona. As we look back with gratitude and ahead with renewed purpose, we are filled with awe at all that God has done—and continues to do—through this vibrant spiritual home.
Our theme for this historic year, “May we be one,”draws from Pope Leo XIII’s call that “One in Christ, we are One.”In a world that often feels fragmented and divided, this call to unity in Christ is not just timely—it is essential. It reminds us that our faith is not lived in isolation, but in communion—with God and with one another.
As we enter our centennial year, we’re witnessing a beautiful and Spirit-led renewal at Newman. Our student community is growing—more young people are seeking the Lord, finding joy in authentic community, and responding to His call in new and courageous ways. Grad students and young adults are stepping into leadership and deepening their roots in the Church. Resident members continue to be the steady heart of our liturgical and spiritual life. And our alumni and friends carry the light of Newman far beyond Tucson, shaping the world with lives of witness and love.
This flourishing would not be possible without the support and prayers of so many. We are especially grateful to the members of our Sustaining Board, Newman Foundation, Resident Community, Young Adults, and beloved Students, whose generosity of time, resources, and care continues to be a vital force in helping us fulfill our mission.
As we celebrate this centennial year, let us give thanks to all who have come before us, and commit ourselves to carrying their legacy forward. May this be a time of recommitment—to faith, to unity, to joyful witness. May the Spirit of Christ continue to stir our hearts and move us outward, together, in mission.
This month is especially momentous as our university community comes together to celebrate our campus' history during homecoming. You are all cordially invited to attend our tailgate celebration on Saturday, November 8. We hope to see you there!
