The Holy Father released an Encyclical Letter last week, DILEXIT NOS “On the Human and Divine Love of the Heart of Jesus Christ.” The document is deeply inspiring, taking for his reference point the timely image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I am especially moved by his reflection on how the sufferings of a radically secular world can be met only by encounter with the living God—made evident so beautifully in the traditional image of the divine love that flows from the Heart of Jesus.
I would note that previous papal letters from earlier decades and centuries could be challenging for the average faithful to read and appreciate. It was as though they were written by professional theologians to be read and studied by other professional theologians. Our Holy Father writes to us like a true pastor. He uses language and concepts that—while profound and rich—are nevertheless written with each of us in mind. As I began reading the document, I slowed down, wanting to savor the images he presents and linger with the wisdom he offers. I hope you will want to do the same.
