Submitted by Catholic Community Services Bishop Gerald Kicanas recently spent an afternoon at the John A. Valenzuela Youth Center (JVYC), a program of Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona, where he experienced firsthand the joy, growth, and opportunity the center brings to local youth. Since 1994, the JVYC has provided a safe and healthy space for at-risk youth ages 5-18 to succeed academically and socially. Activities emphasize educational goal setting and achievement, development of resiliency skills, and positive social and lifestyle skills.
During his visit, Bishop Kicanas was fully immersed in the life of the center—touring the facility, participating in activities, and engaging directly with the children and teens who call JVYC a second home. From judging a lively shaving cream sculpture contest to sharing jokes that had the kids laughing, his presence was met with enthusiasm and warmth. The retired bishop also took time to listen. In meaningful conversations with teens, he heard how JVYC has shaped their lives, supported their goals, and inspired their dreams for the future. He learned about the center’s new initiatives designed to deepen educational and personal development opportunities.
A highlight of the visit was seeing the JVYC store in action, where youth learn the value of responsibility, saving, and hard work by earning “JVYC Bucks,” lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. Throughout the afternoon, Bishop Kicanas witnessed the powerful impact of JVYC’s mission: to provide a safe, supportive space where young people can grow in confidence, character, and hope. His visit was a joyful reminder of the importance of investing in our youth and walking alongside them as they build their futures.
